COLOURIST CLASSES

Our courses are part of ICA- International colourist Academy. The purpose of the ICA courses is to enable industry professionals to develop their expertise further and master the art of colour manipulation. Now in its 5th year the courses have proved immensely popular and are established as an important component in training the colourists of tomorrow. All students who successfully finish the Resolve 101,  Resolve 201, Popular Looks and Masterclassess will be rewarded with 1 FREE  3D LUT from the Mytherapy filmstock emulation collection that has been used on some major feature films. RESOLVE 101

Ideal for first time users and you do not need to be a Colorist to attend. This class is ideal for Junior colorists, editors, DITs, DPs, and VFX artists, basically anybody with a desire to get into color correction. Remember “It’s more about the Art than the App”.

DAVINCI RESOLVE FUNDAMENTALS

This class is an excellent introduction to DaVinci Resolve for the first time users and anyone who wants to learn how to use the software but does not want to become full time colourist. This class is run as Bring Your Own laptop or a limited group of 8 on our systems . The class gives an overview of the software, the operational side of Resolve with some practical real world training on colour tools, grading approaches, techniques and workflows. This class is ideal for anybody with a desire to get to know Davinci Resolve: DIT’s, Editors, Photographers, Cinematographers, Designers, VFX artists.

  • Getting different RAW camera formats into the Resolve
  • Basic Color theory and how this works in the DaVinci

The class mixes the operational side of Resolve with some practical real world training on workflows, basic color theory, grading approaches and techniques. It is run at a relaxed pace, questions are encouraged and group participation is a key part of the course. You are encouraged to download Resolve Lite and have a play. This class is ideal for Junior colorists, editors, DITs, DPs and VFX artists, basically anybody with a desire to get into color correction.

  • Digital Cinematography Fundamentals: RGB, Gamma, Colour Spaces
  • The truth about resolution, bit depth and dynamic range
  • How we perceive and react to colour

DAVINCI RESOLVE 201

Ideal for current Resolve Colorists and assistant operators. We cover advanced techniques and tricks using DaVinci Resolve V12. These classes are normally capped at eight-ten students with each person getting a workstation. Students are encouraged to bring their own material so the instructor together with the students can grade and discuss the different formats and challenges. This is an advanced class that looks at color correction in general not only from the DaVinci point of view. This  class is designed around a short conformed sequence that you can take away. We will work through the project from start to finish, using Resolve V12 and general colorist strategies to get the job finished. You will be able to keep the media project and stills, a great way to continue your learning.

CONTENT:
  • A complete workflow using advanced techniques on supplied material that you can take away.
  • Export and XML/AAF from FCP/Premiere. How to Round-trip successfully.
  • Conform the ProRes in Resolve using the XML, it’s not correct what can we do?
  • How to animate shapes and framing with the reframing tools
  • Bring in audio .wav then compare the conform with the offline reference movie.
  • Swap to the RAW camera files.
  • “Conform v Bake”, what are the pros and cons of each workflow?

In this course we will be working on a project that was a theatrically released feature film. The feature was shot on Red Epic using anamorphic lenses. We are going to take the film from the preparation for grading through to the final deliverables. Apart from the obvious colour grading work we will also take an extensive look at the new features in Resolve V12 for online and mastering from a feature film perspective.

This class is a great insight into how famous looks and styles are created. It is a general class and it is grading system independent. ACES

This course teaches theory and practice of using Academy Colour Encoding System developed by the Science and Technology Council (STC) of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS). The aim of this course is to show how ACES is set to:

  • Improve and simplify post-production workflow
  • Restore and preserve current motion picture assets
  • Create a standard that is ready for future technologies.

Dado Valentic will discuss the technical and visual requirements for acquisition and processing using ACES and introduce the basic practical workflow using Davinci Resolve.

Dado Valentic is an award winning master colourist with over 16 years of industry experience. Credited for several developments in the field of RAW camera processing, Dado Valentic is at the very forefront of colour grading technology, continually pushing the boundaries and bringing innovations within this field. Working on some of the biggest feature films and commercials across the world, he is one of the most sought after colourists around. MASTERING COLOURS Dado Valentic’s approach to colour training blurs the boundaries between the arts, science and technology. The aim of his colour training work is to bring innovation and offer a deeper understanding of colour and perception that reaches far beyond perimeters of his research lab. Dado Valentic’s approach to communicating colour science has won him a wide audience with over 20 sell-out classes at the ICA-International Colourist Academy in London. Warren Eagles is a freelance colorist based in Australia. He has an extensive 25 year career with experience in all forms of color correction. Now a Resolve owner/operator he runs his own shop and splits his time between grading and running training classes with the ICA. His credits include commercials for Qantas,Ford, Mitsubishi, Revlon, and Tooheys, mainstream UK and Australian dramas and documentaries including the first Australian DI movie “Blurred” and Guy Ritchie’s cult movie “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels“. Warren founded the ICA with Kevin Shaw in 2009 and has so far conducted over 50 classes worldwide. He enjoys the challenges of working on different types of projects with new clients in both the coloring and training environments.
